Game Haven Lodge - Blantyre - Malawi

                                                     VIDEO

It was a relatively easy day of traveling from Bushman’s Baobabs Lodge to Game Haven Lodge. The main roads in Malawi are in good condition compared to some other places. Traveling full-time can be a tiring business, and I was looking forward to simply switching off and relaxing for a day or two. I was immediately made to feel welcome when I arrived at Game Haven Lodge. The cottage I was given was absolute luxury compared to many places I have occupied on this journey. There was a TV, small fridge and even a fireplace (which admittedly seems a bit excessive in the warm Malawi weather). Taking a hot bath was a treat. Sitting on my own private veranda with a G & T watching the sun set over the golf course where wild game roamed freely was a real privilege. Game Haven Lodge has excellent bar facilities and a restaurant. I met the experienced head chef one evening while they were busy preparing a feast of meat on barbecues on the lawn and he seemed to know his stuff. They also have a well maintained swimming pool, a very much needed thing when the Malawian heat starts getting to you. The golf course is also in fine form like the rest of the place that is neat, tidy and well maintained. A generator assures 24 hour electricity amid the frequent and prolonged power cuts this country experiences. There is also a play park with ample activities for the kids so that weary parents have more time to concentrate on the business of holiday revelry. Game Haven Lodge is a short drive from the center of Blantyre and routes to other parts of Malawi is also easily accessible from this picturesque location. All in all I had a very relaxing and comfortable stay. Thank you so much Game Haven Lodge

Things I liked: the hot bath, the privacy and comfort

Things that need improvement: filter instead of fake coffee at breakfast would have been nice and a bigger variety of fruit won't hurt

                Bushman's Baobabs  Lodge - Liwonde - Malawi

                                                      VIDEO

I loved Cape Maclear, but it’s a busy space and I was in desperate need of some peace and quiet, so I was relieved when Darren agreed that I can go check out his lodge within the borders of the Liwonde National Park. Many years ago I was a safari guide, and if there’s one thing I’ve missed dearly; it’s the African bush; and I'm not talking about the fake bush vibe you get at many places, I’m talking about the real deal where danger from the wild and home comforts fuses to give you an authentic bush camp experience. Bushman’s Baobabs Lodge is such a place. I felt right at home the minute I walked into the camp and realized that this was exactly the re-union with the bush I have been yearning for, for so many years. The camp is unfenced and the many wild species roaming the park might show up in the ‘backyard’ at any moment.  As it happened, in the week I spend there my sleep was interrupted three times by elephants feeding noisily on the trees just outside my safari tent. (I could hear their stomachs grumble!) Sunset is a good time to go to the lookout deck and enjoy the last warm rays and there is always a good chance of spotting some game hanging around a great watery expanse not too far in the distance. When darkness sets in you can sit around the fire under the stars and NOT WATCH TV! Instead you can have a meaningful conversation with the other good folk in camp after which the drums that announces dinner ring out into the noisy night filled with the call of frogs and other wild creatures. Each night we sat around a communal table and I’m still trying to figure out how they managed to make such good food in the middle of the wilderness. The staff are supper helpful and friendly and willing to tend to your every need. I had a great stay and I hope to be back soon.

Things I liked: the wild bush, the lookout post, the amazing food and the friendly staff

Things that need improvement: the noisy generator in the afternoons kind of spoils the vibe, it would be cool if it can be soundproofed somehow

Fat Monkeys Lodge - Cape Maclear - Malawi

VIDEO

It was a hard road from Pemba, Mozambique to Malawi. We drove through the night, non-stop. 27 hours to be exact. We spent the first night at a friend of a friend’s retreat. We arrived late at night and camped on hard ground. The next day we spent at said friend’s place next to the lake. On the third day we arrived at Cape Maclear. Pretty soon all fingers pointed towards Fat Monkeys Lodge, the place that would become our home from home for the next week. Receiving us with open hearts and big smiles they happily sponsored our camping, which became my central base of operations for my whole stay in Cape Maclear.  Fat Monkeys is situated smack bang in the middle of Cape Maclear overlooking the lake. You literally only have to walk a few paces to go for a swim. They have a fully equipped beach bar and a kitchen that serves great value meals. The staff are friendly and helpful. They have a shady campsite overlooking the lake, chalets and dormitories. They offer activities like beach volley ball, canoeing, boat trips, scuba diving and they even have a beauty spa. I had a great stay at Fat Monkeys and hope to return at some point (for that massage). Thank you Fat Monkeys!

Things I liked: the central location, the welcoming administration, the campsite

Things that need improvement: bright light in the campground at night kept me from my sleep
